Has Glasto lost it’s magic?

topic Allot of people seem to think so, but what do you think? Do slow ticket sales and Hip-Hop headliners spell the beginning of the end for the king of the festivals?

I've made it a point to study, compare and contrast, each Glasto line-up after 2003 -- the year I so luckily attended. Radiohead and REM were both reason enough to max my credit cards and convert my then, weak Canadian dollars into real money. When the 2003 line-up was finally revealed - a whole month after the money was spent - I was shocked and amazed at how lucky I was that not only two of my top-shelf bands were headlining, but another ten or so were also set to appear. Included in that list were Supergrass, Flaming Lips, Interpol, Doves, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Delgados, and for Christ's sake, YES!!! I even had to miss Super Furry Animals and Yo La Tengo, not mention Grandaddy, because of other performances.

But, I digress. To answer your question, I think Hip-Hop headliners have gone the way of the novelty act. No Hip-hop fan adores the artist like a prog-rock fan adores, say, for example, Radiohead. And the nostalgia headliner, (i.e. Macca) would send a rabid music geek, like myself, to the "Other Stage" right after Pipes of Peace.

I've examined every Glasto line-up I could find, and excluding Jeff Buckley's appearance in 1995, I believe 2003 stands as the best line-up ever. My advice to Micheal Eavis: choose the 'best' act, not the biggest one conveniently found. Would he ever consider Rush? C'mon...I'm Canadian eh.

I don't think that Glasto has lost any magic at all. I think the headliner's were a tad disappointing, although I cant wait for The Verve, but I think a main reason for the slow ticket system is the ridiculous ticket system.

Its like signing a bleeding contract. No one can predict the future, so it seems alittle unfair that, from the 9th May anyone who has a ticket HAS to go or else waste their ticket. I know we need to make a stand against ebay sellers, but that shouldnt be to the cost of the average buyer. Simply by banning the placement of tickets on online sites will reduce the amount of ebay like transactions enough to make tickets cheaper second hand for late buyers, and allow those that can no longer go to the festival to not lose their money.

For what it's worth I love the line up of this festival - The Verve, Biffy Clyro, Elbow, John Mayer, Ben Folds, Vampire Weekend, Fatboy Slim, Band Of Horses, massive attack....some great bands. Michael Eavis HAS chosen the best acts, people just need to see beyond the damn headliners.
